3 Components of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports)

Teaching appropriate behavior in ALL settings.

Interventions when behavior expectations are not met.

Recognition when behaviors are met.

Southern Elementary PBIS Team Mission Statement:

The mission of the Southern PBIS Team is to teach and recognize positive behavior through the implementation of a data-driven, school-wide program to maximize social, emotional, and academic STORM behaviors in all students. We will accomplish our mission by providing a safe and supportive learning environment where students will practice school-wide expectations with teachers and staff serving as positive role models.

School-Wide Expectations and STORM Pledge

WE ARE SOUTHERN. With every tornado comes a STORM.

We will have Self-Control, Take Responsibility, Be On Time and Ready, Show Respect, and Make a Positive Difference.

As part of our PBIS program at Southern Elementary, we have adopted a school-wide framework for all staff to follow. These standards define our expectations for behavior in our school, where you find posters hung and students saying the STORM pledge daily as a reminder to be a STORM student.  Our framework is not only used in the classroom, but also in non-classroom settings such as the hallway, cafeteria, playground, and bus.

All teachers and staff members use evidence-based practices to increase student learning and positive behavior. When working with students, we the Southern staff will:

Constantly teach and refer to our school-wide expectations.

Provide students with more re-teaching than correction.

Talk to students with respect using a positive tone.

Actively engage everyone in the class during instruction.

Use pre-correcting, prompting, and redirecting as we teach.

Look for the positive first and provide positive, immediate, and frequent feedback.

Positive Behavior Rewards

Students may earn positive rewards daily. Grades, classes, and individual students may earn rewards by showing STORM behavior across all school settings. Rewards can be given by any teacher or staff member to students caught exhibiting this conduct and modeling positive behavior. Each homeroom also has a STORM Student of the Week where they highlight a student and how they choose to show their positive behavior to others. We will also have a STORM Friday, once per nine-week period, where the whole school will be rewarded on their hard work in earning positive behavior points and rewards.

Southern Elementary PBIS Video

As a promotional and “pump up” tool for our PBIS program, we have created a video that will allow students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members to learn more about PBIS at Southern. This video will serve to educate as well as reinforce the importance of everyone’s part in creating a school-wide PBIS program and using the behaviors, language, and mindset to effectively implement the program overall.
